The South Dakota town of Sioux Falls has lots of natural beauty to enjoy including the Big Sioux River that tumbles over rocks in Falls Park, where you'll also find the ruins of a 19th century Queen Bee Mill and an observation tower. The Old Courthouse Museum is another place where the history of Sioux Falls can be found, but this place isn't just about its history and heritage as there are lots of attractions for families. Let's take a look at the top five family-friendly annual events that make Sioux Falls an ideal place to vacation.
Independence Day
The Independence Day celebration at Falls Park is an annual highlight. If you're among the first 5,000 attendees, you'll get a free lunch. Live music plays throughout the day and there are lots of other forms of entertainment. If you're really active or want to get more active during the summer, why not take part in the 5K fun run that can also be walked. There's also a parade down Phillips Avenue as well as a presentation of the flags and singing of the national anthem.
Music
Music lovers are well catered for in Sioux Falls. The Summer Classic Beer and Music Festival, an outdoor music event that takes place each June in Cherapa Place, and Sioux Falls JazzFest in Yankton Trail Park that takes place each July, are two great examples. They might not be right for children of all ages, but Dancing with the Sioux Falls Stars that takes place in November is the sort of family fun event everyone will love.
Harvest Festival
The annual Harvest Festival is a great day out in October for all the family to enjoy. The children can get their faces painted or they can paint a pumpkin in preparation for Halloween. Children and adults will enjoy the live music on stage, and there are lots of vendors on hand so bring plenty of money to this event which always takes place on the second Saturday in October and normally starts at 11 am.
ZooBoo
Everybody loves Halloween but maybe they celebrate it a little bigger in Sioux Falls. Each year, children and adults get to enjoy ZooBoo, which is a three-night festival that takes place at Great Plains Zoo. The decorated exhibits are accessed by walkways on which the kids can stop and collect treats from costumed performers. The Extinct Species Graveyard is a special presentation that kids will love as it introduces them to the long-gone species like the Dodo bird and the Caspian Tiger. A spooky carousel and carved jack-o'-lanterns add to the spectacle.
Parade of Lights
Christmas is another time of year that's celebrated in its own special way at Sioux Falls. The annual Parade of Lights in Downtown Sioux Falls normally takes place in late November as part of the build-up to the festive period. Visitors get to see decorated floats and marching drummers parade along the road. Of course, Santa's always there to wave to the crowd. You'll need a warm drink or two and a blanket thought as it's normally cold at that time of year.
